Gluten and Your Gums

Did you know that your dentist may be able to help detect a possible gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease?

Oral signs that you may have a gluten intolerance include:

  • Dental enamel defects

  • Ulcers or canker sores

  • Dry mouth

Not all patients with these symptoms have a gluten intolerance or Celiac disease, but these symptoms are quite common in those who do have a Celiac Disease diagnosis, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

For some, it is actually the only Celiac Disease symptom they will experience.

Undiagnosed Celiac Disease (if not following a strict gluten free diet) can lead to cancers of the mouth, pharynx, and esophagus.

If you have any of these oral symptoms, be sure to have a conversation with your healthcare provider and discuss next steps.
